Ranchi, August 28 (HS). Jharkhand Education Project Council under the School Education and Literacy Department of Jharkhand Government is organizing a reading campaign from August 27 to September 9 in collaboration with UNICEF, IPEL, and Room to Read India. This campaign organized by the department aims to develop interest in reading among children, connect the community and parents with children's reading and make everyone aware of the children's literature available for children. In this 14-day campaign, a school level activity has been scheduled every day which is to be done by teachers with the cooperation and participation of children and the community.
State Education Project Director Aditya Ranjan flagged off the reading mobile van related to this campaign on Wednesday. This mobile library van will go to schools, where various types of reading activities will be conducted with the children. During the inauguration program of the reading campaign, Aditya Ranjan emphasized the importance of developing the habit of reading from an early age. He said that developing the habit of reading from an early age not only helps children achieve their academic goals, but also helps in their overall development.
Read-a-thon organized on September 3
A “Read-a-thon” will be organized on September 3 from 11 am to 11:30 am. During the Read-a-thon, children, teachers, officials and community will read books at different places. It will be concluded by organizing a seminar at the state level on September 9. The achievements of the campaign and future action plans will be discussed in the closing program.
Campaign is important to promote the importance of reading and increase interest in it: Abhinav Kumar
State Program Officer (Quality Education) of Jharkhand Education Project Council, Dr. Abhinav Kumar, considering this campaign important from the point of view of importance of reading and increasing interest in it among children, said that not only teachers and children, but people of the community should also participate in the activities of this campaign. This campaign will also be widely publicized through various social media platforms like Facebook and X, so that more and more people participate in the activities of this campaign.
Regular reading develops children's language and vocabulary as well as imagination: Parul Sharma
UNICEF Education Specialist Parul Sharma said that early education is very important for laying the foundation for children's future success. It is not limited to studies only, but it also develops important life skills like interpersonal relationships, cooperation, and emotional control. Through this reading campaign, we want children to get ample opportunities to read books. Reading books regularly is very important for the mental development of children. It not only enriches their language and vocabulary, but also enhances their thinking ability and imagination. Apart from this, reading books increases confidence and understanding ability in children.
Key activities of the campaign
-Library promotion in the classroom: Teachers will keep children’s literature books, Pankh magazines, reading cards, story, poem charts organized in the library and encourage children to come to the library and read books of their choice.
– Pledge Reading and Story Telling: This session is an effort to connect children to their cultural heritage. Local people will be encouraged to share their traditional folk tales and stories in their own language.
-Acting and Drama: Children will be asked to prepare short plays based on the stories they have read, which will enhance their imagination and expression skills.
-Reading Comprehension Games: Engage children with games that will help them expand reading comprehension skills like story-mapping and character analysis.
-Drawing and Painting: Children will draw pictures from their favourite story books. Teachers will interact with children on the pictures in story books and posters and encourage them to draw pictures from their favourite books.
– Read-a-thon: 'Read-a-thon' will be organized on September 3 from 11 am to 11:30 am. In this, all the participants read together at different places at a fixed time.
– Reading with family: Parents will read children's literature, poems, story posters, reading cards with children in school. This enriches the culture of reading at home as well.
– State Level Seminar: A seminar on “Primary Education” will be organized at the state level in collaboration with leading institutes and universities. The objective of the seminar is to share the best efforts of the activities organized during the fifteen-day reading campaign and to consider the future action plan for language teaching at the primary level by the stakeholders related to education – teachers, NGOs and policy makers.
