Mumbai, June 03 (HS). The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said on Monday that 97.82 percent of the two thousand rupee denomination notes have returned to the banks. Now only Rs 7,755 crore worth of notes are still in circulation with the people, as the Rs 2000 denomination note is still valid.
RBI said that the total value of 2000 rupee denomination notes in circulation at the end of business on May 19 was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. According to the Reserve Bank, only Rs 7,755 crore worth of notes remained in the market at the end of business on May 31. The central bank said that thus 97.82 percent of the 2000 rupee denomination notes in circulation till May 19 have returned to the banking system.
According to the Reserve Bank, the facility to exchange two thousand rupees bank notes is available in 19 issue offices of RBI from May 19, 2023. Earlier, till October 7, 2023, the facility to deposit or exchange two thousand rupees notes was available in all bank branches of the country. The issue offices of the Reserve Bank are accepting Rs 2000 notes from individuals and institutions for depositing them in their bank accounts from October 9, 2023.
Apart from this, people are sending Rs 2000 notes from any post office in the country to any issue office of RBI through Indian Post to deposit them in their bank accounts. RBI has 19 regional offices located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram to exchange Rs 2000 notes.
RBI had announced the withdrawal of the Rs 2000 denomination note from circulation on May 19, 2023. Rs 2000 notes were introduced in circulation in November 2016 after the current Rs 1000 and Rs 500 bank notes in circulation at that time were demonetised.
