RBI has issued a statement regarding the Rs 2000 note in which it has said that 97.76 percent of the demonetised Rs 2000 notes have returned to the banking system. Only Rs 2,000 notes worth Rs 7961 crore are still with the people.
RBI said that the withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes was announced on May 19, 2023. By the end of this day, the value of Rs 2000 notes in the market was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. Now on 30 April 2024, only Rs 7961 crore notes are in the market. However, RBI says that Rs 2000 note is valid. People can deposit Rs 2000 notes or exchange them for other notes at 19 RBI offices across the country.
The public can send Rs 2000 notes through India Post to any RBI office and deposit the same amount in their bank accounts. The Rs 2000 notes were issued after the Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes were demonetised by the RBI in November 2016.
