Mumbai, 10 October (HIST). Top industrialist Ratan Tata lived by the teachings of simplicity of his grandmother Nawazbai Tata throughout his life. The journey of Ratan Tata's life was not easy. The former chairman of Tata Group also had to face family discord. His grandmother nurtured him and taught him to live a simple and peaceful life, which Ratan Tata followed till the end of his life.
Ratan Tata was born on September 28, 1937 in Mumbai. Ratan Tata's father Naval Tata was adopted by the Tata family. Naval Tata was also a relative of Hormusji Tata. In 1948, when Ratan Tata was 10 years old, his father Naval and mother Sonu got divorced. Ratan Tata was then looked after by his grandmother Nawajibai. He brought up both Ratan Tata and his brother. That's why Ratan Tata always remembered the lessons given by his grandmother.
While speaking in an interview, Ratan Tata had told some stories related to his grandmother's memories. Ratan Tata had said that if you look at it this way, my childhood was fun. But as my brother and I grew up, we had to face aggression and some problems. The reason for this was the divorce of our parents. But our grandmother brought us up well. When my mother remarried, some kids in school were talking about us here and there. However, our grandmother always taught us not to cross the limits. This teaching is with us till today.
Ratan Tata had further said that due to this teaching of grandmother, we often ignored such statements and thus avoided further debates. I still remember my grandmother taking me and my brother to London during the summer holidays after World War II. There I got to learn the value of life. She always told us not to say anything that would make anyone feel bad. That is why we have been taught since childhood that we should not violate limits. Grandma was always with us.
Ratan Tata had said that I wanted to learn violin but my father asked me to learn piano. I wanted to go to college in America but my father insisted on me going to the UK. I wanted to be an architect and they wanted me to be an engineer but if it weren't for my grandmother I would never have been able to go to university in America. It was because of him that I got into mechanical engineering but came out with a degree in architecture. My father was very upset and there was a lot of argument. But finally I stood on my feet. My grandmother taught me that courage can also be gentle and respectful. Ratan Tata followed his grandmother's teachings throughout his life and expanded the Tata brand all over the world with great ethics and dedication. Furthermore, due to his philanthropic personality, he became a favorite of the youth of India.
