In the Sanatan Hindu calendar, both the monthly Pradosh Vrat and the monthly Shivratri are considered very sacred and fruitful days for the worship of Lord Ashutosh Mahadev. Whenever these two holy dates fall together on the same day, it is considered a very rare and very auspicious coincidence in the scriptures. Trayodashi Tithi is worshiped in the evening as Pradosh Vrat dedicated to Lord Shiva, while the arrival of Chaturdashi Tithi is considered best for night time Nishita Puja in the form of monthly Shivratri. On this day, by jointly worshiping Mother Goddess Parvati with Mahadev, the major planetary defects of the horoscope are pacified, the fear of untimely death is eliminated from life and one gets relief from financial troubles. According to astrological scholars, on this auspicious date, Bholenath roams on the earth in a very gentle form and showers blessings on the devotee offering just one pot of pure water and Belpatra by raising both his arms.
To take full advantage of this great coincidence, it is considered very important to perform worship at the right time and auspicious time. According to the scriptures, the main puja of Pradosh Vrat is always performed in the period 45 minutes before sunset and 45 minutes after sunset i.e. ‘Pradosh Kaal’. This evening, the best puja time of Pradosh Kaal will be from 05:48 pm to 08:22 pm. During this time, Rudrabhishek of Lord Shiva and chanting of Panchakshari Mantra will give the best results. On the other hand, the main puja of monthly Shivaratri is performed at midnight, which is called ‘Nishita Kaal Muhurta’ in Tantra and Shiva Sadhana. The special time of worship of Nishita Kaal will be from 11:42 pm to 12:33 pm tonight. The devotees who worship Lord Shiva during these two periods and do night vigil respectively, get the same virtuous results as performing Ashwamedha Yagya.
On this day, wake up in Brahma Muhurta, after taking bath, wear clean light colored clothes and take a resolution of fasting while remembering Lord Shiva in your mind. Keep your mind calm and disorder free by eating fruits throughout the day. Before the beginning of Pradosh Kaal in the evening, purify the place of worship by sprinkling Ganga water. After this, install the Shivling facing north and first of all offer pure water mixed with Ganga water from a copper or silver pot. Then anoint the Lord with raw cow’s milk, curd, pure desi ghee, honey and sugar (Panchamrit) while reciting ‘Om Namah Shivay’ or Mahamrityunjaya mantra respectively. After Abhishek, take bath again with pure water and apply Bhasma, Chandan and Tripund. Offer Lord Ashutosh to Lord Ashutosh by writing ‘Ram’ or ‘Om’ on 11 or 21 unbroken (uncut) Bel leaves with white sandalwood. Along with this, offer Shami Patra, Dhatura, Bhang, Mandar flowers, white sweets and seasonal fruits with devotion.
According to mythological stories, once upon a time there was a very poor Brahmin, whose husband had died. She and her younger son somehow managed their living by begging. One day, while returning from almsgiving, he met a boy from Vidarbha country, who was injured and hungry. That child was actually the prince of Vidarbha, whose father’s kingdom had been snatched away by his enemies and his father had died. Out of pity, the Brahmin brought the prince to her home and started raising both of them like her own son. After some time, on the instructions of a sage, the Brahmin started observing Pradosh fast as per the rituals. After a few days, the prince was wandering in the forest when he met the Gandharva girl Anshumati. Both became fascinated with each other. When Gandharva king came to know that he was the prince of Vidarbha, by the grace of Lord Shiva he got his daughter married to that prince. After this, with the help of a huge army of Gandharvas, the prince regained control over his ancestral kingdom and he gave the highest honor and glory to the old Brahmin and her son in the royal palace. In this way, all the poverty of the devotees who fast and listen to the story with selfless or fruitful intentions on this day is eliminated.
If there is any obstacle, disease or financial crisis in life for a long time, then in today’s double great coincidence, some simple astrological remedies must be done. The first solution is to go to an ancient Shiva temple in the evening and light an 11-faced ghee lamp or at least one four-faced lamp and sit there and recite Shiv Chalisa. Second solution, offer 108 Akshat (unbroken rice) on Shivalinga praying that the store of food and money in the house should always be full. Third solution: To wish for sweetness in married life and early marriage, offer red chunari and makeup material to Goddess Parvati and white colored flowers to Mahadev. Fourth solution: People suffering from Saturn’s Sadesati or Dhaiya should offer some black sesame seeds and Shami leaves mixed in water on Shivalinga. Fifth and most effective solution, chant Mahamrityunjaya Mantra at least 5 times with Rudraksha rosary during Nishita period of the night. This sadhana removes mental stress, transmits positive energy and speeds up the stalled work.
