Rare coincidence of lunar eclipse on Saavan Purnima! Know the most auspicious time for bathing and donating and what things donated after the eclipse will provide relief from Pitra Dosh and troubles Sawan Purnima Chandra Grahan 2026

In Hindu religion and Vedic calendar, the full moon date of Saavan month is considered to have extremely sacred and spiritual significance. This is the same auspicious day when Rakshabandhan festival, symbolizing brother-sister love, is celebrated, Amarnath Yatra ends and special worship of Lord Shiva and Chandradev is done. This time, a very rare and astronomical and astrological combination of Lunar Eclipse is taking place on Saavan Purnima.

According to religious beliefs, the results of Ganga bath, penance and charity done on the day of Sawan Purnima are a thousand times more than on normal days. At the same time, the charity done during the eclipse and after the end of the eclipse (Moksha Kaal) eliminates major planetary defects, ancestral defects and mental stress in the horoscope.

If you also want to receive the blessings of Lord Bholenath and Chandra Dev on the day of Sawan Purnima, then know in detail the exact time of bathing and the complete list of sacred items to be donated after the eclipse.

According to astrology, lunar eclipse has a direct impact on the Earth and the people of all the 12 zodiac signs.

  • Rule of Sutak period: The Sutak period of lunar eclipse starts exactly 9 hours (3 Prahar) before the eclipse touches. As soon as the Sutak period begins, the doors of the temples are closed, any kind of idol worship or auspicious work is prohibited and cooking and eating food is avoided.

  • Rules for pregnant women and children: During the eclipse period, pregnant women are advised not to use sharp objects (scissors, knives, needles) and stay indoors. Tulsi dal or kusha (grass) is pre-added to cooked food, milk and drinking water so that it is not affected by negative energy.

  • Mantra chanting time: During the eclipse period, instead of sleeping or talking unnecessarily, it is considered best to mentally chant Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, Gayatri Mantra or ‘Om Son Somay Namah’.

On the day of Saavan Purnima, the auspicious period of bathing and charity remains valid from Brahma Muhurta till the whole day. However, there are two special stages of bathing-daan in the context of eclipse:

  1. Morning bath-donation auspicious time (Brahma Muhurta): The time from 04:30 am to 06:15 am is best for taking bath in the holy river during sunrise and offering Arghya to Sun God.

  2. Daan period before Sutak: Before the start of Sutak period, it is extremely fruitful to donate food, fruits and dakshina as per one’s capacity to Brahmins, needy people and girls.

  3. Mahasnan Muhurta after Eclipse Moksha: As soon as the eclipse ends (immediately after the Moksha period), the whole body is purified by bathing with fresh water or water mixed with Ganga water and after that a resolution of ‘Moksha Daan’ is taken.

There is a provision in the scriptures that the donation made immediately after the salvation of the eclipse directly reaches the ancestors and gods and pacifies the inauspicious effects of Rahu-Ketu and Moon. Donating these things on Sawan Purnima is considered especially fruitful:

  • White objects (for the peace of the moon): Donate raw milk, rice (Akshat), white batasha, sugar (sugar), kheer, curd and white sandalwood to strengthen the Karkatva of Moon God and for mental peace.

  • Grains and dry ration (Annadaan): By donating 7 types of grains (Saptadhya), wheat, gram pulses and flour to the granary of a needy family or temple, the store of food grains in the house never becomes empty.

  • Silver Charity: If you have the capacity, then donating a silver coin, a pair of small silver snakes or a silver Shivalinga on Saavan Purnima provides immediate relief from Kaal Sarp Dosh and Pitra Dosh.

  • Clothing Donation: Donate white dhoti, kurta, sarees or towel to the poor or beggars. This provides health benefits and provides relief from chronic diseases.

  • Sesame and Jaggery (Rahu-Ketu Peace): Donation of black sesame, white sesame and jaggery removes the inauspicious effects caused by eclipse and brings positive energy in life.

As soon as the eclipse ends, the following rituals must be followed for purification of the house and worship of God:

  1. Moksha Bath: All the members of the house should take bath by adding a few drops of Ganga water in fresh water and wear clean washed clothes.

  2. Purification of home and place of worship: Sprinkle Ganga water throughout the house, especially in the kitchen and temple to eliminate the shadow of eclipse.

  3. Jalabhishek of God: Open the doors of the home temple, bathe the idols of Gods and Goddesses with Ganga water and Panchamrit, wear new clothes and offer fresh flowers and offerings.

  4. Light the lamp: Light a lamp of pure cow’s ghee at the main entrance of the house and the puja room and fumigate the entire house with camphor and incense sticks.

  5. Avoiding stale food: Give the food prepared before the eclipse without Tulsi to animals or birds and after the end of the eclipse, prepare only fresh Satvik food and offer it to God and then consume it yourself.

Being the last day of Sawan, the result of special worship of Lord Shiva on Purnima is considered equal to the virtues of many births. On Shivalinga after eclipse:
