Kolkata, August 26 (HS). The West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) on Monday took suo motu cognizance of a viral video threatening to rape the minor daughter of Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee. This video is spreading rapidly on social media, in which Abhishek Banerjee's daughter is being publicly threatened with rape.

In this regard, WBCPCR Chairperson Tulika Das has written a letter to the Superintendent of Police of Basirhat Police District, demanding immediate police intervention in the matter. According to a copy of this letter available with “Hindustan Samachar”, the Commission has appealed for immediate action by taking the matter seriously.

The viral video shows that the threat was made during a protest against the gruesome rape and murder of a female junior doctor at Kolkata's state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital recently. In the video, a man is heard threatening to rape Abhishek Banerjee's minor daughter and also announcing a reward of Rs 10 crore for it. The man is said to be a resident of Malancha village in Minakhan CD block.

In her letter, the WBCPCR chairperson has requested the police to investigate the matter and take appropriate action. The commission has also asked the police whether any FIR has been registered in the case and whether any steps have been taken for the safety of the minor girl.

The letter also said, “You are requested to submit the action taken report in the matter along with copies of the FIR and other relevant documents to the Commission within two days of the receipt of this letter so that the Commission can take further action in the matter.”

Apart from this, if any other commission has contacted the police or any other authority regarding this matter, then a copy of that communication has also been requested to be provided.
