Rakshabandhan, the great festival of unwavering love and trust between brother and sister, is celebrated with great enthusiasm every year on the full moon date of the month of Sawan. Every year on Rakshabandhan, sisters and families are most worried about ‘Bhadra Kaal’, because in astrology, tying Rakhi during Bhadra Kaal is considered completely inauspicious and prohibited. The news of great relief for the devotees is that this year there will be no inauspicious shadow of Bhadra on the holy festival of Rakshabandhan. According to the Panchang, as Bhadra is over, Rakhi can be tied at auspicious times throughout the day.
Who is Bhadra? Know the story of mythological origin
According to Hindu mythological texts and theology, Bhadra is considered to be the daughter of Lord Sun and the real sister of Shanidev, the god of justice. According to the legend, Bhadra was born to destroy demons and suppress miscreants. As soon as she was born, Bhadra’s nature was extremely fierce and destructive. She started creating obstacles in auspicious and religious activities and started influencing the laws of creation.
Seeing this fierce and playful nature of Bhadra, the gods and sages became extremely worried. Then Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, controlled Bhadra by persuading her and gave her a special place in the Vishti Karan of the calendar. Brahma Ji instructed that whoever does marriage, house warming, Raksha Sutra Bandhan or any new auspicious work during the time of Bhadra, there may be obstacles in his work. Since then the tradition of sacrificing Bhadra period for auspicious works started.
Why is tying Rakhi considered completely prohibited during Bhadra period?
In astrology and Vedic scriptures, Bhadra period is considered to be an extremely inauspicious and destructive yoga. There is a clear mention in the scriptures- ‘Bhadrayan Dwe Na Dutvaye Shravani Falguni Tath’ That is, two things should never be done during Bhadra period – first, Rakshabandhan (Shravani) in Sawan and second, Holika Dahan (Phalguni) in Falgun.
According to religious beliefs, Surpanakha, sister of Lankan leader Ravana, had tied the Raksha Sutra to Ravana during the Bhadra period itself, which resulted in the destruction of Ravana’s entire clan and empire within a single year. This is the reason why tying Rakhi during the head and tail time of Bhadra is considered inauspicious for both the brother and the family.
Rakshabandhan 2026: The sacred occasion of tying Raksha Sutra will last throughout the day.
This year, on Rakshabandhan, as the time of Bhadra ends before sunrise, there will be no shadow of Bhadra during the day. According to the Panchang, on Purnima Tithi, sisters will be able to tie Raksha Sutra on the wrists of their brothers for the whole day without any doubt and interruption. Tying Rakhi especially in Abhijeet Muhurta, Vijay Muhurta and afternoon time will be very beneficial and fruitful.
