Rain wreaks havoc in Himachal! 13 people died due to cloudburst near Samaj Bridge, rescue operation continues

A deadly cloudburst occurred near Samaj and Bagi bridge near Shrikhand in Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday night, trapping 45 people. Rescue operations are underway in the disaster-hit area. Baljinder Singh, Commandant of the 14th Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), said that this year NDRF teams were deployed in Himachal Pradesh with full readiness so that there is no delay in rescue operations.

Singh said, “This year NDRF teams were sent to remote areas of Himachal Pradesh to ensure that there is no delay in rescue operations. Cloudburst is a major disaster in the society.” He further said that till Thursday morning, 13 bodies have been recovered. Earlier four bodies were recovered. Ten more people were missing and so far we have found nine bodies.

He said that one person has not been identified yet. We will ensure that the rescue operation is carried out properly. Earlier, the IMD had reported heavy rains across the state on August 7, with Joginder Nagar in Mandi district receiving the highest rainfall of 110 mm in 24 hours.

IMD Himachal Pradesh chief Kuldeep Srivastava said an alert had been issued for various areas on Wednesday. “We have recorded 110 mm rainfall in Joginder Nagar in Mandi district during the last 24 hours. Heavy rain is falling in Sirmaur district,” the doctor said. “Moderate rain has been recorded in other parts of the state,” Srivastava said. “About 75 per cent of the areas have received rainfall ranging from 30 mm to 50 mm in the last 24 hours.” The IMD has issued an orange alert for the lower Himalayan districts of Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Chamba and Mandi.
