According to the police, the incident occurred on Monday morning after the collapse of the old Kijabe Dam located in Mai Mahiu area of the Great Rift Valley region. The Great Rift Valley region is prone to flash floods. After the dam broke the water started flowing downwards. Due to heavy rains in the last few days, many areas of Kenya have been flooded. About 140 people have died so far due to the flood.
