Rain and snowfall have become a disaster in Jammu and Kashmir, many houses have collapsed due to landslides, schools have been closed

Jammu and Kashmir landslide: Heavy rain and snowfall in the hilly areas of Jammu and Kashmir has thrown life out of gear and more than three dozen houses have collapsed in the state and many are on the verge of collapse. Baramulla, Kishtwar and Reasi districts suffered the most damage.

12 houses destroyed in Kishtwar

On the other hand, 12 houses have been damaged due to heavy rains in Kishtwar district, forcing the authorities to put the disaster response machinery on high alert. In this regard, an official spokesperson said that the administration has kept the disaster response machinery on high alert amid heavy rains in the area for the last four days. He said reports from the concerned tehsildars indicate that about a dozen houses have been damaged in tehsil Nagaseni, Mughalmedan and Kishtwar areas.

The Meteorological Department has also predicted snowfall and rain in most areas on Tuesday. In such a situation, it has been decided to keep schools closed in Kashmir on Tuesday. The Junior Assistant type examination to be held on Tuesday in Kashmir has also been postponed. Regarding Jammu-Srinagar Highway, officials have advised the passengers to avoid traveling on the highway till the debris is cleared.

Red alert in Kishtwar district

Many hilly and remote areas have lost connectivity with the district headquarters due to broken roads and landslides. Kishtwar district is on red alert.

Four people have been washed away in rivers and streams in Gulabgarh, Ramban and Reasi of Doda, out of which bodies of two have been recovered. 22 people including 12 children have been injured when the bus fell into a ditch due to landslide and building collapse.

Traffic stopped on Mughal Road

Landslides have occurred at half a dozen places on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in Ramban district, due to which traffic has come to a standstill. The Mughal Road connecting Kashmir via Poonch is already closed.

On the other hand, most of the hills of Kashmir including Gulmarg are covered with snow. The danger of avalanche has increased in North and Central Kashmir. An avalanche occurred in Sonamarg on Monday afternoon. The incident took place in a forested area so there were no casualties.

On the other hand, it continued to rain throughout the day in Jammu also. Due to the rains in the state for the last four days, the water level of rivers and canals has increased. 336 families have been evacuated from flood affected areas in Kupwara to safe places.

Four storey building collapsed in Gulabgarh

A four-storey building collapsed due to landslide in Gulabgarh. Three houses have also collapsed in Poonch district. A bus full of school children fell into a ditch in Mandi of Poonch, in which 12 children were injured.
