IRCTC informed about the easy allocation of lower berths to senior citizens. A passenger had tweeted that he had booked a train ticket for his uncle and preferred the lower berth because he had pain in his legs, but even after this the Railways gave him the upper berth.

Railways told how to book lower berths for senior citizens

Responding to the passenger's tweet, the railways wrote that if you book a ticket under the general quota, you will be allotted a seat only if there is a seat. If there is no seat, you will not get a seat. If you book under reservation choice book, you will get a lower berth only if a lower berth is allotted.

Lower berths are available on a first come, first served basis.

Railways said that those who book under the general quota are allotted seats only when seats are vacant. These seats are available on first come first serve basis. There is no human intervention in getting a seat in the general quota. However, you can approach the TTE for lower berths and negotiate for a lower berth for yourself. If a lower berth is available, you will get it.
