Indian Railways has taken a strict legal stand against those spreading fake, old and misleading videos on social media related to alleged chaos at railway stations and trains during the festive season. Northern Railway has filed a named FIR against two Instagram handlers for spreading misleading content on railway premises and trains. Railway administration clearly says that there is no restriction on recording the actual situation by common passengers, but those who present videos of old or other places by linking them with the current festive crowd to spread sensation and gather views, will not be spared at all.
During Diwali and Chhath Puja, the natural crowd of passengers increases at railway stations. In such a situation, some social media creators and pages were sharing videos of old stampedes, passengers entering through train windows and accidents or disturbances of previous years as being fresh. According to the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northern Railway, due to these videos, an atmosphere of unnecessary fear and chaos was being created among the homebound passengers and their families. When the Railways’ Social Media Monitoring Team investigated, it was found that the visuals circulated by the concerned Instagram handlers were completely false and out of context, following which a criminal case was immediately registered with the Police.
Railways has activated a special 24×7 digital monitoring cell to prevent misinformation and rumors on social media, which is keeping a close watch on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. Railways has issued a public appeal saying do not share or repost any non-authenticated video, picture or news without knowing the truth. If any person is found knowingly involved in misrepresenting the security of Railways, spreading panic or propagating false information, punitive action will be taken against him under strict provisions of the Indian Judicial Code and the Railway Act.
