Railway rules without train ticket: Getting a confirmed train ticket during the festive season is no less than a difficult task. In fact, during this period the number of passengers traveling in trains increases manifold. But this does not mean that you start traveling by train without a ticket. If caught doing this, TTE can impose a fine on you. At the same time, in some cases you may also be sentenced to imprisonment. In such a situation, know the whole thing before getting into any trouble.

Under which section is the fine imposed?

Sections 137 and 138 of the Railway Act 1989 detail the fines imposed on passengers traveling without tickets.

How much is the fine?

According to Indian Railways rules, if you are caught traveling in a train without a ticket, you may have to pay a fine of up to Rs 250. Along with this, the full price of your ticket is also recovered as fine.

In this situation, a higher penalty may be imposed

If a passenger is caught traveling without a ticket during a train journey and it is not clear from where he has boarded the train, then in that case the fare from the station from where the train is coming to the last station will be charged. It is collected as fine.

Platform tickets may reduce fines

If you want to avoid such a situation then you should buy a platform ticket from the station from where you are boarding the train. Platform ticket can be proof of which station you boarded the train from.

Can I get a seat after paying the fine?

It is not mandatory that if a ticketless passenger pays the fine, he will get a confirmed seat. However, it depends on the TTE. If there is any vacant seat in the train then it can be given to the passenger.

If you are traveling without ticket then do this

In case of non-availability of ticket, merely purchasing platform ticket is not sufficient. To avoid any major inconvenience, you should contact the TTE as soon as the journey begins and explain your situation to him. By doing this, your chances of getting a berth increase and you also get rid of any kind of unnecessary trouble.

…otherwise you will be sent straight to jail

According to railway rules, if you are caught without a ticket and the TTE is not satisfied with your arguments, you can be punished with a maximum imprisonment of up to 6 months or a fine of up to Rs 1,000 or both.
