Rahul Gandhi’s speech at Brown University; Doubt on Maharashtra election, serious allegations on Election Commission

Boston (America): Congress leader and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, who is currently on a visit to the US, expressed deep concern over democracy and electoral process in India during a conversation with students at Brown University. In particular, he highlighted the issue of alleged irregularities in the Maharashtra assembly elections and questioned the role of the Election Commission. Rahul Gandhi said that the election process in India is in serious crisis and the public’s trust is ending. He doubted the ‘unusual polling data’ during the Maharashtra elections, saying that this has staked the transparency and credibility of the entire system.

“6.5 million votes after 5:30 pm? It’s impossible!”

Talking to the students, Rahul Gandhi said, “During the Maharashtra elections we got voting figures till 5:30 pm. But after that in just two hours i.e. between 5:30 and 7:30 pm, it was found that 65 lakh people had voted.” He said, “This is physically impossible. It takes a average of three minutes for a voter to cast his vote. If you do mathematics, it shows that people were standing in queues and voting till 2 in the morning, which is wrong. It’s not reality.”

“Election Commission has lost its fairness”

Rahul Gandhi also directly accused the Election Commission. He said, “We asked the commission whether videography of the voting process is being done? He not only refused, but also changed the law, so that we can no longer demand videography.” He said that this is not just negligence, but a deliberate agreement with impartiality. He said, “We clearly realized that the Election Commission had given up fairness.”

Danger for democracy: Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi’s emphasis was on the health of democracy. He insisted, “There is some serious mess in the system. We all should see it and ask questions.” He has raised his voice several times before in the election process about the flaws, and he also reiterated his point from the brown university stage.

Direct dialogue with youth

In this event held at Brown University, the students asked Rahul Gandhi many questions, during which they raised the issue of transparency in democracy, media, judiciary and elections in India. His focus was on increasing awareness among the youth and he urged him to actively think and change.
