Team India played three ICC finals during Rahul Dravid's coaching tenure. After missing the trophy twice, Team India finally gave a memorable farewell to its coach by winning the T20 World Cup 2024.
On this auspicious occasion, BCCI announced to give Rs 125 crore to the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup, out of which Rs 5 crore was announced to be given to the head coach of the winning team i.e. Rahul Dravid, but Dravid refused it. It has been decided to give half of the prize money.
According to the information, head coach Rahul Dravid got Rs 5 crore. While the other coach of the team had to pay Rs 2.5 crore. In such a situation, Dravid has decided that like other coaches, he will also take Rs 2.5 crore. That is, Dravid decided to take a bonus equal to his support staff.
A day after India won the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup with a thrilling seven-run win over South Africa in the final at the Kensington Oval, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said the team will be awarded a total cash prize of Rs 125 crore.
According to the distribution formula, head coach Dravid and all 15 members of the team were to get Rs 5 crore each. While batting coach Vikram Rathod, fielding coach T. Dilip and bowling coach Paras Mahambre and other support staff were to get Rs 2.5 crore.
However, Dravid refused to accept ₹2.5 crore as his bonus along with the rewards given to other support staff.
“Rahul wants the same bonus amount (₹2.5 crore) as his support staff (bowling coach Paras Mahambre, fielding coach T. Dilip and batting coach Vikram Rathore). We respect his sentiments. We do,” a BCCI source told Hindustan Times.
This is not the first time that Dravid has taken a stand for equal distribution of awards. Dravid did something similar during his tenure as the head coach of India's Under-19 World Cup-winning team in 2018.
At that time, Dravid was to get Rs 50 lakh while other members of the support staff were to get Rs 20 lakh each.
In such a situation, Dravid refused to divide the amount in this way, due to which BCCI was forced to make some changes in this bonus and reward everyone equally.
The board then released a revised list of cash awards, giving Rs 30 lakh to each member of the support staff, including Dravid.
