Kolkata, August 31 (HS). The situation worsened due to police misbehavior during the demonstration of students and alumni of Rabindra Bharati University against the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The protesters blocked BT Road at 4 am today. A long queue of vehicles has formed at Sithi turn on the road from Dunlop to Shyambazar.
What happened was that a protest was held by closing a part of BT Road at around 11 pm on Friday night. After this, the students performed a street play. By then it was 3:30. These students are demanding a fair investigation of the incident. The protesters allege that during the play, a civic volunteer, while driving a bike in a drunken state, hit the barricade of the students and started making objectionable remarks.
It is said that the students stopped him and started protesting again. Later a policeman came to rescue him. This policeman was also in a drunken state. This further infuriated the students. Amrapali Bhattacharya, a former student of the Drama department of Ravindra Bharati University, said, “We are putting forth our point peacefully. The accused who made the objectionable remark has been let go by the drunken policeman. We have detained the drunken policeman since 3:55 am. Our demand is that the civic volunteer should be brought back here and action should be taken against him in front of us.”
Due to the closure of BT Road, daily commuters are facing a lot of trouble. Due to the closure of the road, they are looking for other routes to catch the metro towards Dum Dum. A daily commuter said, “I had to reach the office at seven in the morning. My hopes were pinned on the bus, but now I am facing trouble due to the closure of the road.” Meanwhile, the situation on BT Road is tense. The police administration is trying to control the situation.
