New Delhi, 22 August (HS). The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has appointed former India fielding coach R. Sridhar as the assistant coach of the senior men's team. 54-year-old Sridhar will join the team for the only Test against New Zealand and the three-match ODI series against South Africa. A long-term contract can be discussed later.
Sridhar has a lot of coaching experience and has served as India's fielding coach under Ravi Shastri till the 2021 T20 World Cup. From 2008 to 2014, the former first-class left-arm spinner also served as the assistant fielding and spin bowling coach at India's National Cricket Academy and was also the assistant coach of the 2014 India Under-19 World Cup team. He has also enjoyed a coaching stint with the Kings XI Punjab franchise in the IPL.
Sridhar will work under head coach Jonathan Trott in the Afghanistan squad as they play a one-off Test against New Zealand in Noida starting September 9. The three ODIs against South Africa will be played in Sharjah starting September 18.
