Quick identification and prompt treatment of sepsis is essential: Dr. Ved Prakash | News India

Lucknow, September 12 (HS). Sepsis can affect people of all ages and backgrounds. The mortality rate is also high in elderly and newborn babies suffering from sepsis. The main reason for this is that the immune system is weak to fight diseases. This information was given by Professor (Dr.) Ved Prakash, Head of the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, King George Medical University.

Dr. Ved Prakash said that prompt identification and prompt treatment of sepsis is essential. Sepsis is mainly caused by pneumonia (lung infection), urinary tract infection or infection at the operation site. In India, approximately 1 crore 10 lakh people suffer from sepsis every year, out of which approximately 30 lakh people die.

A recent study also revealed that more than half of ICU patients in India suffer from sepsis and the prevalence of sepsis caused by multi-drug-resistant bacteria is an alarming high of 45 per cent. More than half of ICU patients in India suffer from sepsis, and such cases have increased rapidly over the last decade, according to a new study. In a study, more than 56 per cent of the 677 patients sampled from 35 ICUs across the country were found to have sepsis and what was more worrying was that in 45 per cent of the cases, the infection was caused by multi-drug-resistant bacteria.

Sepsis can be prevented by vaccination and good care, and early identification and treatment can reduce sepsis mortality by 50 percent. This lack of knowledge makes sepsis the number one preventable cause of death worldwide. Professors Dr. R.A.S Kushwaha and Dr. Rajendra Prasad of KGMU Department of Pulmonary Medicine were prominently present in this press conference.
