The king’s wife Shaibya was also always worried about not having a son. To get relief from his suffering, he made many pilgrimages and also performed penance, but did not get any results.
One day, he rode his horse to the forest for hunting. In the afternoon he reached an ashram to quench his thirst. There he saw Lomesh Muni, who was doing penance. The king saluted him and narrated his plight. Lomesh Muni told the king that Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Paush month is known as ‘Putrada Ekadashi’. He advised the king and queen to observe this fast.
Following the sage’s orders, King Suketu and Queen Shaibya devoutly observed the fast of Putrada Ekadashi. He worshiped Lord Vishnu with complete rituals and followed the rules. After some time, due to the effect of the fast, Queen Shaibya became pregnant and gave birth to a bright son. King Suketu and Queen Shaibya were very happy and since then they spread the importance of this fast.
Therefore, fasting on Putrada Ekadashi is considered extremely fruitful for childless couples.
