Nepal's Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' won the trust vote in Parliament on Wednesday. Nepal has long faced political instability due to the making and breaking of alliances. Prachanda of Nepal's Communist Party (Maoist Centre) got 157 votes in the 275-member House of Representatives. His party is the third largest party in the House.
A total of 268 MPs were present during voting in the Parliament House located at Naya Baneshwar in Kathmandu. 110 MPs voted in strong opposition while one member abstained from voting. To win the trust vote, Prachanda needed 138 votes.
Vote of no confidence for the third time in one and a half years
Announcing this, Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire said, 'The Prime Minister has won the trust vote.' Recently, Prachanda broke the alliance with Nepali Congress and joined hands with Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist), due to which voting took place in the House on Wednesday. This is the third time in one and a half years that Prachanda has had to seek a trust vote in the House. As per constitutional provisions, the Prime Minister is required to receive a vote of confidence after either partner leaves the ruling coalition.
Shaking hands with biggest rival Oli
Prachanda had to prove his majority after the separation from Nepali Congress, the largest party in the House of Representatives (HoR). Now they have formed an alliance with the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), which will be led by former Prime Minister of Nepal KP Sharma Oli. Oli is one of the biggest critics of Prachanda. Prachanda became Prime Minister for the third time on 25 December 2022.
