Punjabi talk about immigrant students in 'Barmajra' school, out of 285 only 50 original village students and 235 immigrants

SAS Nagar: In the special news of 'Admission Hall in Middle Schools of Mohali', it is very important to mention Government School Badmajra of Education Block Kharar-1. Badamajra is the biggest school in the district. 285 students were admitted here during the academic year 2023-24. The big thing is that the number of girls among them is 157 and that of boys is 128. Barmajra village, located on the left side of National Shah Road-21 coming from Kharar to Mohali, is located at a distance of two kilometers from Phase-6 of Hitech City Mohali, where most of the students are children of migrant workers. Of the total students, 235 have come here from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and other states with their ancestors in search of employment. The interesting thing is that they no longer speak Bhojpuri, Maithali or Garhwali, but speak 'Punjabi' despite it not being their mother tongue.

Punjabi people are shying away from Punjabi Medium

According to data obtained from schools in villages and towns surrounding the city in the district, either Scheduled Caste students or migrant workers study in government schools. Even though the mother tongue of the workers who have come from other states of India in search of employment is not Punjabi, their children are getting education in Punjabi medium schools.

It is also important that apart from studying in Punjabi medium, these students are now adopting Punjabi as a spoken language. The other but dangerous side of the coin is that the children of natives of Barmajra (children of Punjabis) are studying in English medium schools to become a source of international education. According to the details, only 50 students from Badmajra are studying in this school. The remaining students are receiving education in schools, especially in Chandigarh and Mohali, where speaking 'Punjabi' is banned and fines are imposed. When the team of 'Punjabi Jagran' went to the school and talked to the students, the tone of the spoken language was standard and very good. On talking, it was also revealed that the parents of these students mostly work as laborers in vegetable shops and factories.

correct teacher-student ratio

An important fact is that Badamajra is the only school in this education block Kharar-1 where there are 40 students per teacher. Uniform criteria and ratio per student have been made by the Education Department. There are 120, 67, 98 students studying in classes 6th, 7th and 8th respectively, who are being taught by 7 female teachers. According to the details of schools received from 8 blocks of the district, out of total 100 schools, there are 76 schools where the number of students is so low that in one section there are not even half the students as per the prescribed standard.
