Chandigarh: Punjab Police launched 'Sanjh Rahat Project' to identify and help victims of domestic violence. Punjab Police chief Gaurav Yadav said the project aims to provide psychological, social, legal support to victims of domestic violence and enable them to lead a violence-free life.
He said it is a project of the Community Affairs Division (CAD) of Punjab Police and social service organisations. It is supported by the Health Department, Social Security and Women and Child Development Department, State Legal Services Authority and District Legal Services Authority.
Yadava, while inaugurating the project from Punjab Police Officers Institute, said that initially the project has been started as a pilot program in the Civil Hospital of SAS Nagar and then it will be expanded across the state
He said the 'Saanjh Rahat' initiative will empower women to make appropriate and informed decisions for a violence-free life. He said two dedicated counsellors have been deployed at Civil Hospital, Mohali to identify and assist victims of domestic violence, thereby bridging the existing gap in support services for women affected by violence.
Special DGP Gurpreet Kaur Dev said the project will help provide better coordinated support to victims of domestic violence and create a network of organisations and individuals for need-based assistance to women victims of domestic violence. Awareness training sessions are also being organised for women police officers and station house officers (SHOs), she said.
Today, a one-day awareness training programme was organised, involving women police officers of SAS Nagar and 10 SHOs of the district, while tomorrow, Friday, a technical session is being conducted for women police officers and SHOs of Rupnagar and Fatehgarh Sahib districts.
On this occasion, eminent experts including Jaya Velankar, Dr. Rangoli Gupta and Shailaja Aralkar led sessions on important topics including 'Gender Equality and Violence against Women', 'Intersectoral Coordination' and 'Women-Centric Approach to Violence against Women'.
