Explosive batsman Abhishek Sharma was dismissed cheaply in the quarter-finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Maharashtra on Saturday. He played an inning of 19 runs in 16 balls, which included four fours. Mukesh Chaudhary destroyed Punjab’s top order, and Abhishek’s flop show proved to be detrimental for the team, as Punjab lost the match by 70 runs.
Earlier, Abhishek had performed brilliantly by scoring more than 50 runs in four consecutive matches. He is the fifth highest run-scorer in this tournament, having scored 467 runs in 8 innings at an average of 58.37, which includes one century and three half-centuries. His highest score came against Saurashtra, when he scored 170 runs in 96 balls with the help of 22 fours and 8 sixes.
Maharashtra, batting first, scored 275 runs losing 6 wickets in 50 overs. Arshdeep Singh gave a great start to Punjab by dismissing captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sidesh Veer. However, a 145-run partnership between Arshin and Ankit helped Maharashtra post a respectable score.
Bawne scored 60 runs in 85 balls, while Kulkarni scored a brilliant 107 runs in 137 balls. After his dismissal, Nikhil Naik (52 off 29 balls) and Satyajit Bachchan (20 off 15 balls) took Maharashtra’s innings to a good score. Arshdeep Singh took three wickets for 56 runs in 9 overs, while Naman Dheer took two wickets for 29 runs in 7 overs.
