Punjab Chief Election Commissioner directs district officials to immediately refute misinformation and disinformation

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C has directed all the Deputy Commissioners, Police Commissioners and SSPs to immediately refute any kind of misinformation or information spread during the Lok Sabha elections-2024. He said that social media platforms can be used effectively for this purpose. Along with this, he stressed that various social media platforms should also be used to convey important messages and information to the voters during the elections.

Addressing a high-level meeting with all the Deputy Commissioners, Police Commissioners and SSPs of Punjab through video conferencing at the Chief Electoral Officer office, Sibin C said that the elections should be conducted in a transparent manner without favoritism and without any pressure. He said that the election staff are bound to implement the instructions of the Election Commission of India in a phased manner and any kind of negligence will not be tolerated. Appropriate action will be taken against negligent officers and employees.

He said that any type of complaint during the election process should be resolved within the time limit prescribed by the Election Commission of India. He directed that if any incident occurs in any district, it should be immediately reported so that necessary steps can be taken. He encouraged the district officials to work fast and smartly during the elections.

Sibin C said that to implement the slogan 'This time 70 crossed' to increase the voting percentage, all the districts should increase activities by identifying those areas where the voting percentage was decreasing during the last elections. Along with this, he directed that if any political party asks for any kind of permission during the election process, then it should be settled within the stipulated time limit. He said that district officials should hold meetings with political parties and keep their representatives informed about the instructions and rules of the Election Commission.

He asked the Deputy Commissioners-cum-District Election Officers to immediately issue instructions to the concerned officers/employees to remove/cover the photographs of political personalities displayed on all government buildings following the Election Code of Conduct. Along with this, the Chief Electoral Officer urged the district authorities to provide necessary facilities to the polling personnel and voters and to create the best polling stations.

On this occasion, Sibin C took information about the election activities of all the districts and also took feedback. While issuing necessary guidelines to the district officials, he asked them to timely form the committees/teams/cells to be formed as per the instructions of the Election Commission of India. During the meeting, ADGP-cum-Lok Sabha Election Nodal Officer M.M. Farooqui gave detailed information about the security related issues during the elections. He said that Punjab Police and other security forces are committed to conduct the elections in a transparent and peaceful manner.

Additional Chief Electoral Officers Harish Nair and Abhijeet Kaplish, Joint Chief Electoral Officer Secretary Singh Ball, other officials of the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer and officials of Punjab Police were present during the meeting.
