Samajwadi Party MP from Kairana Iqra Hasan Chaudhary has admitted that she and BJP leader Mriganka Singh have the same gotra. He expressed pride in it, calling it a part of his history.
BJP leader Mriganka Singh’s father Hukum Singh belonged to the Hindu Gurjar community, while Iqra Hasan’s father Munnawar Hasan belonged to the Muslim Gurjar community. Both the families are associated with the Kalsyan Khap of Gurjars. According to historical beliefs, a part of this gotra accepted Islam and became Muslims several generations ago.
‘Sharing Gotra is part of our pride’
On a question asked by Shalini Kapoor Tiwari in the podcast, which talked about Hukum Singh’s family and Iqra Hasan’s family belonging to the same gotra, the MP said:
- “It is believed that our Gotra is one and we come from the same place. Along with caste, Gotra is also important among Gurjars. “We share our gotra, and that makes me feel proud.”
- “Our ancestors are no longer alive to explain this in detail, but it is a widely accepted belief that the history of both families is the same.”
Mutual respect despite political rivalry
Iqra Hassan also discussed her relationship with Hukum Singh’s family.
- “There has certainly been political rivalry between our families, but it has always been full of dignity and respect,” he said.
- “In 2017, when I was campaigning for my brother, I used to meet Mriganka Singh’s daughter on the way. We both always greeted each other warmly.”
- “We never made unnecessary comments at each other. This is a testament to the mutual respect between our families.”
Emphasis on increasing role of women in politics
Despite the Muslim majority population (30 percent) in Kairana, he termed it as a bold move by the Samajwadi Party to field him after the 2013 riots.
- Iqra said, “It is very important for women to enter politics. Women have an inclusive approach. “They can be tough, but not as tough as men.”
- “The more women enter politics, the better it will be for the society and the country.”
Iqra’s statement and political message
This statement by Iqra Hasan not only sets an example of civility in relationships with political opponents, but also shows how shared cultural and historical heritage can also strengthen family and social ties.
His emphasis was also on women’s participation, which reflects his thinking of inclusive politics.
