Kolkata, August 17 (HS). A situation of potato crisis may arise once again in West Bengal, as the Progressive Potato Businessmen Association has once again declared a strike from Saturday night.
There is a fear that due to this strike, there may be a potato crisis in the markets across the state. The Progressive Potato Businessmen's Committee alleges that unnecessary complications are being created in sending potatoes to other states and even other districts. Putting forward this allegation, they have decided to go on strike again. The state leadership of the association said that the strike will begin in the entire state from Saturday night. If this happens, then naturally there will be a shortage of potatoes in the markets.
The Progressive Potato Businessmen's Committee had called for a state-wide strike on July 20, alleging police obstruction in export of potatoes to other states. This strike lasted for 5 days. At that time, there was a potato crisis in the state's markets. However, at that time Panchayat Minister Pradeep Majumdar and Agriculture Marketing Minister Becharam Manna had held a meeting with potato traders. After getting assurance of solution of the problem from both the ministers, potato traders had also decided to end the strike, but now once again potato traders have said to follow the same path. The committee claims that potato traders are being harassed by the police and administration in sending potatoes not only to neighboring states but also to other districts.
