After the stage and “Mann Ki Baat”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now entered the world of podcasts. He had his first podcast discussion with Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha, where he talked about the qualities required for success in politics and personal experiences. In this discussion, PM Modi said that only a good team player can become a successful politician.
Secret of success in politics: Team work and dedication
When the Prime Minister was asked what special qualities a politician should have, he said:
“To be successful in politics, it is necessary to have dedication, commitment and to be a companion of the people in their happiness and sorrow.”
He also said that merely gaining power or winning elections does not make one a successful politician.
“If someone thinks that I will control everyone, everyone will obey my orders, then it is possible that his politics will work. But this is not a guarantee that he will become a successful politician.”
Inspiration from freedom movement
Referring to the freedom movement, Prime Minister Modi said that at that time people from every section of the society were inspired by the spirit of patriotism and joined the movement. He said:
“The great leaders who emerged after independence all came from the freedom struggle. His thinking, maturity and sense of dedication towards the society was of a different level.”
Modi stressed that people should enter politics with a mission and not just personal ambition.
“One who comes into politics with a mission definitely finds his place.”
Mahatma Gandhi: A Unique Leader
Giving the example of Mahatma Gandhi, PM Modi said that Gandhiji completely changed the definition of a leader prevalent in today’s times.
“Mahatma Gandhi had a simple personality. He was thin and not skilled in the art of speech, but his life spoke. This was his strength, which made the entire country stand behind him.”
He said that in today’s era the definition of a leader has changed. People give importance to oratory skills and attractive personality. But in the end, it is the life and actions of any leader that make him successful.
The art of conversation: more important than speech
PM Modi said that the art of oratory is important, but what is even more important is “talking the talk”.
Citing the example of Mahatma Gandhi, he said:
- Gandhiji always advocated non-violence.
- He never wore a cap, but the “Gandhi cap” became famous all over the world.
- He never contested elections nor held power, yet after his death he was honored as “Rajghat”.
Need for new thinking and new energy in politics
The Prime Minister said that it is necessary for new and good people to continuously come into politics.
“People should come into politics with a mission. If they are dedicated to the betterment of the society, their place is assured.”
