Prime Minister launches 'Water Conservation Public Participation Initiative' | News India

New Delhi, 06 September (HS). Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched the 'Water Conservation Public Participation Initiative' in Surat, Gujarat through video conferencing.

While addressing the programme organized on this occasion, the Prime Minister said that today an important campaign is being launched by the Ministry of Water Power from the land of Gujarat. Earlier, there was a havoc of rain in every corner of the country in the last few days; there would hardly be any area in the country that did not have to face the crisis due to this calamity.

The Prime Minister said that this time Gujarat faced a huge crisis. All the systems did not have the strength to withstand this fury of nature but the people of Gujarat and the countrymen have a nature that in times of crisis, everyone helps each other shoulder to shoulder. He said that water conservation is not just a policy, it is also an effort and let's say it is also a virtue. There is generosity and responsibility in it. When the coming generations will assess us, our attitude towards water will probably be their first parameter. Because this is not just a question of resources. This is a question of life, this is a question of the future of humanity. Therefore, among the 9 resolutions that we have put forward for a sustainable future, water conservation is the first resolution.

He said that water conservation, nature conservation are not new words for us. This is not a task that has fallen to our lot due to circumstances. This is a part of India's cultural consciousness. We are people of that culture where water has been called a form of God. Rivers have been considered goddess, lakes and ponds have been given the status of temples. Water conservation is not only a matter of policies but also of social commitment. Aware public, public participation and public movement are the biggest strengths of this campaign.

It is noteworthy that under this program, about 24,800 rainwater harvesting structures are being constructed across the state with community participation. These recharge structures will help in increasing rainwater harvesting and ensuring long-term water sustainability.
