Voting is taking place in Russia today for presidential elections amid a fierce war with Ukraine. Voting will take place between March 15 and March 17. However, these elections are being considered a mere formality. Because Vladimir Putin's election as President is almost certain.
This time's Russian presidential election is special in many ways. There are many reasons for that too. This election is taking place at a time when Russia is at war with Ukraine. There is no strong opposition to Putin. Not only this, this is the first time that voting will take place in Russia for three days. Putin's victory in this election is considered almost certain. Actually, the process of presidential election in Russia is quite different. There the President is elected by 'popular vote'.
Meaning the one who gets more than 50% votes is the President. If there are more candidates and no one gets more than 50% of the votes, re-election is held after three weeks, in which only the top-2 candidates are elected. Then one of these two becomes the President.
Why is Putin's victory certain?
Putin has been elected President of Russia four times so far. And in every election their vote percentage has increased compared to the previous election. Putin was first elected president in 2000, when he received 54% of the vote. After this, he got 72% votes in 2004 and 65% votes in 2012. Putin got 77% of the votes in the 2018 presidential election.
According to reports, 71-year-old Putin has the image of a 'strict leader' in Russia. And this is the main reason for its popularity. Although Putin has been accused of 'war crimes' during the war with Ukraine, he enjoys the support of a large Russian population.
Russians believe that Putin is the only one who can give a shocking response to Western countries like the US and Europe. In a February poll, 75 percent of Russians said they would vote for Putin.
Putin will become the most powerful!
Joseph Stalin has been in power in Russia for the longest period. If Putin wins the election, he will remain in office till 2030. Putin has been in power for 24 years and after completing this 6-year term, it will be 30 years. Before him, Joseph Stalin had ruled Russia for 29 years. Stalin ruled Russia from 1924 to 1953. The most powerful person in Russia is the President. And Putin also proves his usefulness in this. Putin not only has influence there, but also has control over everything from the media to his opponents.
This is also a reason for victory!
One reason for Vladimir Putin's victory is that there is no big leader to compete with him. Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov said last year, “At the moment he has no rival and cannot have anyone.” Actually no one can compete with it.
In fact, there is no leader in Russia right now who can compete with Putin. Putin's opposition leaders are either dead or in exile. Just last month, Putin's staunch opponent Alexei Navalny died in an Arctic prison. It is believed that only Navalny can compete with Putin.
Vladimir Putin is almost certain to be elected President
Apart from the navy, private army chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was also considered a big rival of Putin. But a few months ago, Prigozhin also died in a plane crash. Apart from these two, another rival of Putin was emerging, whose name is Boris Nadezhdin. But the Election Commission barred him from standing in the presidential election.
In this election, Putin will face three leaders – Nikolai Kharitonov, Leonid Slutsky and Vladislav Davankov. However, all three are being considered as dummy candidates.
