Presenting the model of reform by G-4 countries in UNSC, India said that the number of Security Council members should be increased from 15 to 25-26

United Nations : India has been continuously demanding reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Now he has presented a comprehensive model of Security Council reform by the G-4 countries. It has been recommended to make the Council more democratic by increasing the number of permanent as well as temporary members. Along with this, the need for flexibility in the use of veto has also been mentioned.

India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj, while participating in the intergovernmental talks on Security Council Reforms (IGN) on Thursday, said that the United Nations is going to celebrate its 80th anniversary next year. In such a situation, concrete progress on the long pending issue will prove to be a milestone. Cambodia presented the G-4 model for discussion and final agreement by Brazil, Germany, Japan and India. The purpose of the proposal is to gain more support by expanding the United Nations. In the G-4 model, there is a proposal to increase the number of Security Council from the current 15 to 25-26. The new members will have six permanent members and four or five temporary members. He said that we are not recommending any country. Of the six permanent members, we want two members each from African countries and Asia Pacific, one member each from Latin America and the Caribbean and one member each from Western Europe and other countries.

Global problems are not being solved due to lack of representation

The G-4 Model notes that the current structure of the Security Council is associated with under-representation and non-representation. Said that the Security Council has failed to solve current global problems and conflicts such as Ukraine and Gaza because it does not have democratic and common representation. Any reform of a Council that lacks representation, especially in the permanent membership, may not be able to deal with the problems.

Any country can use veto only after reviewing the issue

The G-4 model also calls for flexibility in the use of veto in that eligible members can use the veto only after reviewing any issue. The proposal states that the existing permanent members America, Russia, China, Britain and France should not have the right of veto, those who will join the new permanent members should also have this right. On this occasion, the representative of France supported the membership of India, Japan, Brazil and Germany.
