Lok Sabha Elections 2024: The Supreme Court has agreed to list a PIL for hearing on Thursday. This PIL was filed against the practice of political parties giving free gifts or making promises of scheme benefits during elections. It is noteworthy that Lok Sabha elections are going to start from April 19.
Top court ready for hearing…
Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justice J.B. The bench of Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra said on Wednesday that it is necessary and we will continue hearing the case tomorrow also. Senior advocate Vijay Hansaria, appearing for Ashwini Upadhyay, who filed the PIL, argued that the petition needed to be heard before the Lok Sabha elections. The apex court showed promptness on this.
What was the demand made in the PIL?
In the petition, the decisions regarding independent exercise of political parties have been considered a violation of Articles 14, 162, 266 (3) and 282 of the Constitution. The petition sought to direct the Election Commission to confiscate the election symbols of such political parties and register them. The petition claims that political parties make outrageous or unfair promises to gain undue advantage and try to woo voters which amounts to bribery and undue influence.
