It is commendable that the Central Consumer Protection Authority has taken action against coaching institutes giving misleading advertisements. Under this initiative, notices were issued to 45 coaching institutes and a fine of Rs 61 lakh was imposed on 19 institutes.

The Consumer Protection Authority has also succeeded in recovering fees from students who were victims of misleading advertisements. This is a positive step, but at the same time it is necessary to review whether these actions are having any positive impact on the coaching institutes or not.

This is needed because action has been taken against misleading advertisements many times in the past. With the expansion of coaching culture, competition among these institutes has also increased, due to which the practice of misleading advertisements has also increased. Many times students get deceived by these advertisements and take admission in these institutes and later realize that the claims made by the institute are far from reality.

Coaching institutes not only make misleading claims about tuition, but they also make exaggerated claims about their facilities. In many cases, it has been seen that the claims of coaching institutes are neither true in the field of education nor in terms of facilities. Therefore, there is a need to take strict action against the coaching institutes giving misleading advertisements, because many institutes claim that the students studying from them have been successful.

Sometimes the same student appears in the advertisements of multiple coaching institutes. In such cases, if a student avails the free counseling service of a coaching institute and becomes successful in the competitive examination, then those institutes start claiming him as their student. This is a type of cheating, which sends a wrong message to other students.

Of course, these misleading advertisements give the wrong message that coaching is essential for success.

Therefore, there is a need not only to crack down on coaching institutes doing misleading advertising, but also to know why the coaching culture is growing rapidly. Today’s environment has become such that coaching is considered essential for success in competitive and school examinations. This is a serious issue, which the Education Ministry should pay attention to.
