Pranab Surma breaks Asian record with 11.66 meters in Para Asian Games

Indian para-athletes have created a new history on the strength of their indomitable courage and world-class skills in the Para Asian Games being held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. India’s star para-athlete Pranab Surma not only won the gold medal in the men’s discus throw with a mammoth throw of 11.66 metres, but also set a new Asian record. India’s dominance in this competition was so strong that the tricolor waved at both the first and second places. Along with Pranab’s historic gold medal, India’s Ram Ratan Singh also won the silver medal with a brilliant throw of 10.35 metres. From track and field to swimming, Indian players performed strongly on Tuesday, taking the country’s total number of medals to 30.

Pranab Surma made a great start as soon as he entered the field, proving his talent in the men’s discus throw F51/F52/F53 mixed event. On the basis of technical accuracy and steely arms, he threw 11.66 meters, which became the new Asian record of this event. Rivals from other countries could not stand before this incredible achievement of Surma. Pranab Surma, who won the silver medal in men’s club throw at the Paris Paralympics 2024, changed the color of his medal this time and targeted gold. Another braveheart of the Indian team, Ram Ratan Singh, registered a best effort of 10.35 meters and ensured a silver medal for the country. The bronze medal of this event went to Iran’s Alireza Hemami, who finished third in the F53 category with a throw of 20.20 meters.

Apart from field events, the speed of Indian runners in track events also surprised everyone. In the women’s 200m T12 event, India’s top sprinter Simran Sharma achieved first place with a sensational time of 24.80 seconds and added another golden success to India’s kitty. In front of Simran’s speed, Iran’s star athlete Hajjar Safarzadeh finished second with a time of 25.02 seconds and had to be satisfied with the silver medal. In the same event, India’s young runner Tejalben Damor recorded her personal best performance by completing the race in 25.23 seconds and captured the bronze medal, while China’s veteran runner Yaqin Shen slipped to fourth place with 26.49 seconds.

India’s star para-athlete Preeti Pal showed extraordinary improvement to finish on the podium in the women’s 200m T35 event. Preeti completed the race in 29.53 seconds and captured the silver medal. The gold medal of this event was won by China’s Zhou Xia, setting a new record of the games with a time of 28.03 seconds. This performance of Preeti is being considered as a historic leap in her sports life, because in the previous 2022 edition, she had missed a medal by finishing fourth with 32.19 seconds. This time he gave a proud moment to the country by registering a huge improvement of 2.66 seconds in his time.

Indian athletes also marked their presence on the podium in para-swimming. India’s Himanshu Nandal displayed brilliant swimming in the final of the men’s 400 meter freestyle S11 event. In a very tough competition, he won the bronze medal with a time of 5:10.91 minutes. The gold medal of this event was won by Chuanzhen Sun of China, breaking the Asian record, while Uchu Tomita of Japan managed to win the silver medal by finishing second. With this victory of Himanshu, India got its second historic medal of these games in para-swimming.

This collective success of the Indian contingent in Nagoya underlines the growing level and strong infrastructure of para-sports in the country. Due to these wonderful medals won in athletics and swimming on Tuesday, India’s total number of medals has increased to 30. The Indian team has so far won 8 gold, 9 silver and 13 bronze medals. This consistent and aggressive performance by the players proves that after the Paris Paralympics, Indian para-athletes are all set to set new records at the international level.
