A major development came to light in the politics of Gilgit-Baltistan on Sunday. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has officially announced the name of Amjad Hussain for the post of Chief Minister, intensifying its efforts to form its government in the region. Amjad Hussain, nominated by party chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, has a long political experience. The decision has been taken following the results of the recently concluded assembly elections, where the PPP has emerged as the single largest party by winning 12 seats in the 24-member assembly.

Who is Amjad Hussain?

Amjad Hussain is a veteran politician from Gilgit-Baltistan. Talking about his political background, he has been a member of Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly from 2020 to 2025. Earlier, he had also served in the Legislative Council of the region from 2009 to 2014. Considering his experience, the PPP leadership has decided to give him the responsibility of Chief Minister, so that he can effectively implement the party’s policies in the region.

‘Power-sharing’ formula of power with PML-N

The PPP has joined hands with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to ensure a stable government in the region. According to the report of Dawn newspaper, a special agreement has been reached between the two parties on sharing power. Under this alliance, the post of Chief Minister will remain with PPP, while the post of Governor will go to PML-N. This formula is very similar to the political arrangement adopted at the central level, which aims to provide good governance in Gilgit-Baltistan through mutual trust and consensus.

Challenges and expectations of the new government

This coalition government will have a big challenge to resolve the economic and administrative issues of Gilgit-Baltistan. PPP and PML-N leaders say that this alliance is based on mutual dialogue and common goals of development of the region. Now that the name of the candidate for the post of Chief Minister has been decided, the process of formation of the new government in the state will soon be formally completed. This new political system is expected to bring administrative stability in the area.
