Post Office MIS Scheme: How much money will you get every month by depositing ₹ 6 lakh in the post office? Know the complete mathematics of interest rate, maturity and earnings

Amidst the ups and downs of the stock market and the financial risks inherent in mutual funds, the common Indian investor is still looking for options that provide completely safe and guaranteed returns for his hard-earned money. If you also want to get a fixed amount every month after retirement to meet your daily needs, children’s education expenses or household monthly budget without any market risk, then Post Office Monthly Income Scheme i.e. Post Office MIS (POMIS) proves to be an unmatched financial instrument. This small savings scheme of the Postal Department, operated under the Ministry of Communications of the Government of India, is directly supported by the Central Government, which simply means that every penny you deposit in it is 100 percent safe and Sovereign Guarantee applies to the interest received on it. While in bank fixed deposits there is a fear of frequent change of interest rates, in this scheme of post office, the interest rate is fixed from the day you open the account, you continue to get fixed income every month without any deduction at the same rate for the entire period of five years.

As per the current quarters of financial year 2026, the central government is offering 7.4 per cent annual interest on the Post Office Monthly Income Scheme, which is calculated on an annual basis but is paid directly into the investor’s account every month. If an investor makes a lump sum investment of ₹ 6,00,000 (Rs six lakh) in this scheme, then at the annual interest rate of 7.4 percent, the total interest for one year becomes ₹ 44,400 (Rs forty-four thousand four hundred). Now since this scheme works on a monthly payment system, the entire annual interest is distributed equally over 12 months, under which the investor gets a monthly income of exactly ₹ 3,700 (Three Thousand Seven Hundred Rupees) every month. This amount of ₹3,700 is automatically credited to your post office savings account or your bank savings account every month through Electronic Clearing Service (ECS/NACH). During the total period of five years i.e. 60 months, you get a total fixed income of ₹ 2,22,000 (Rs. Two lakh twenty-two thousand) only in the form of interest. The biggest relief is that the principal amount of Rs. 6,00,000 invested by you during this period remains completely safe and you get it back after completion of 5 years. In this way, your total amount received (principal + interest) in 5 years becomes ₹ 8,22,000.

To avail the benefits of Post Office MIS Scheme, any Indian citizen can easily apply by visiting the nearest post office. Under this scheme, any adult above 18 years of age can open a single account in his own name, while the facility to open an account in the name of a minor above 10 years of age is also available under the supervision of his guardian. Talking about the investment limit, the government has expanded it significantly for the convenience of investors; Under the current rules, a single person can deposit a maximum of ₹ 9 lakh, whereas if two or three adults together open a joint account, a maximum lump sum amount of up to ₹ 15 lakh can be invested in it. If you want to invest ₹6 lakh, you can easily deposit it in your single account as it falls within the limit of ₹9 lakh. Apart from this, if husband and wife jointly open this account, then this investment can be conducted safely even if both have a joint account. The facility of nomination in the account is compulsorily provided so that in case of any unexpected circumstances, the deposited capital can be handed over to the heir without any legal hindrance.

This monthly income scheme of the post office is for a period of exactly 5 years (60 months), i.e. the account matures exactly 5 years from the date on which the account is opened. After completion of maturity, the investor can withdraw his entire principal amount of ₹ 6 lakh or reinvest the money in a new MIS scheme or other post office schemes like Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) or Time Deposit (TD) as per the rules applicable at that time. However, the government also allows premature closure of the account for emergency needs, but it has some strict financial rules. You cannot withdraw money under any circumstances for the first 1 year of account opening. If you withdraw money after 1 year of account opening and before 3 years, the remaining amount is refunded after deducting a penalty of 2 percent from your principal deposited, i.e. ₹12,000 will be directly deducted on ₹6 lakh. Whereas if you withdraw after completion of 3 years and before completion of 5 years, then 1 percent amount i.e. ₹ 6,000 will be deducted from the principal amount and the remaining ₹ 5,94,000 will be returned. Therefore, the advice of financial experts is to invest money in this scheme only when you are mentally prepared to keep your principal locked for full 5 years.

It is also very important to understand the tax rules on returns received from Post Office MIS. There is no tax exemption on the amount deposited in this scheme under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act. Apart from this, the post office does not deduct any TDS on the interest received every month under the scheme, but this monthly interest is added to the investor’s annual income under ‘Income from other sources’ and tax is payable on it as per the respective tax slab of the investor. For investors who do not want to spend this monthly income of ₹3,700 immediately, there is also an excellent wealth creation strategy. You can get this ₹3,700 monthly interest transferred to the post office recurring deposit (RD) account by giving an auto-debit instruction to the post office. By investing ₹3,700 in RD every month for five years, you start getting compound interest of about 6.7 percent on that interest too, which makes the return on your total wealth after 5 years much higher than normal. Due to the wide network of post offices as compared to banking services in small cities, towns and rural areas of the country, this scheme has emerged as the most reliable option for the local people for old age support and secure monthly pension.
