A shocking study has found that air pollution has reduced the life expectancy of Delhiites by 8 years. Air pollution reaches extremely dangerous levels in winters and other seasons in Delhi and NCR as well as many states of North India.
Due to which millions of people suffer from respiratory diseases. People become victims of asthma and bronchitis. Apart from this, some people also fall prey to life-threatening diseases due to bad weather. The findings of a study conducted by the University of Chicago are worrying. Air pollution has reduced the life expectancy of Delhiites by 8 years. The report says that if Delhi's air has 5 micrograms per cubic meter of pollution as per WHO standards, then the life expectancy of 1.87 crore people living in Delhi can increase by 7.8 years, i.e. an increase of 8 years.
This report is based on the Air Quality Life Index (AQLI). It has been prepared by the Energy Policy Institute of the University of Chicago. The report considers 2022 as the base year. According to which, if the air of Delhi becomes 40 micrograms per cubic meter according to the national standards of India, then the life expectancy of people here can increase by 4.3 years. If the pollution level in the whole of India comes to the WHO standards, then the people of Delhi will benefit the most.
Delhi will be the most polluted city in India in 2022
The report states that Delhi was the most polluted city in India in 2022. Where the average PM2.5 level was 84.3 micrograms per cubic meter. Uttar Pradesh is the second most polluted state after this where the PM2.5 level was 65.5 micrograms per cubic meter. However, the average level of PM2.5 in Delhi in 2022 was 84.3 micrograms per cubic meter, which is a slight improvement compared to the previous report. The previous year 2021 has been considered as the base year.
