The commotion has once again intensified in the political circles and youth of the country regarding the Agneepath and Agniveer schemes related to the Indian military recruitment process. Ever since the Central Government has started this four-year short-term model for the recruitment of soldiers in the army, there has been a period of debate and dissatisfaction at different levels regarding it. Recently, fresh rallies and demonstrations have been organized by various states and political parties against the scheme, bringing the issue once again into the national spotlight. A large section of opposition parties and ex-servicemen’s organizations are continuously alleging that this policy is a big compromise with the military tradition of the country and the future of the youth, due to which it should be withdrawn with immediate effect. In many parts of the country, youth organizations and political activists have opened a front against the government and registered their objections and warned that if their demands are not considered soon, the movement will be intensified.
Sharp objections and main demands of opposition parties and ex-servicemen
Political parties and defense experts who have come out in opposition to the Agniveer scheme say that four years of contractual service can weaken the backbone of the country’s professional army. Opposition leaders and former army officers argue that when the youth come out of the army after such a short period of training and service, there will be great uncertainty about their future and permanent livelihood. He also says that the long-standing regimental culture and the glorious history of permanent job security in the Indian Army is being converted into a contractual system under this scheme. The main demand that has been put forward to the government from various forums is that this scheme should either be completely canceled or the old Permanent Recruitment Process should be restored by making extensive amendments in it. The protesters clearly say that such quick decisions taken on a sensitive issue like national security and without broad political and social consensus are not in the long run in the national interests.
Government’s stand and arguments being given in support of the plan
On the other hand, the Central Government and the Defense Ministry have always maintained that the Agneepath scheme has been thoughtfully prepared to make the country’s armed forces young, technology-enabled and agile. The government believes that through this the youth of the country will get the benefit of discipline, modern technical skills and excellent financial package, which will help them in making a career in entrepreneurship or other fields after completion of four years of service. The government and its supporters also argue that through this scheme, the demographic strength of the country is being used better and it is also helping a lot in reducing the average age of the army. Apart from this, the government has also mentioned the provisions to give priority to Agniveer in various corporate houses and public undertakings so that any kind of apprehension regarding their future can be removed. Despite this, due to opposition parties at the grassroots level and dissatisfaction among a section of the youth, this matter is not coming to a halt.
Future strategies and its impact on political future
As the upcoming elections and political activities are progressing in the country, Agniveer Yojana is becoming a big electoral and social issue. Opposition parties are continuously making it a weapon through which they can strengthen their penetration among the youth coming from rural and military families. Analysts believe that in the coming days, this controversy will not be limited to only policy debates, but it will remain a major cause of political confrontation from Parliament to the streets. The biggest challenge before the government will be how it removes the doubts in the minds of the youth and proves the usefulness of this scheme at the ground level, so that a better balance can be established between the dignity of the country’s defense system and the career aspirations of the youth.
