The death under suspicious circumstances of Indravati Devi, the elderly mother of senior IPS officer Ashutosh Mishra, posted at Lucknow Police Headquarters in Ambedkar Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh and the case of jewelery missing from her body, has sparked a new political turmoil regarding law and order in the state. As soon as the incident came to light, the national president of Samajwadi Party (SP) and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav Has launched a scathing attack on the Yogi Adityanath government of the state.
Akhilesh Yadav, while posting on his official social media handle X (formerly Twitter), raised strong questions on the security system in the state. SP chief wrote, “Sad news has come of the murder of an IPS officer’s mother in Ambedkar Nagar. Police itself is not safe in Uttar Pradesh, unfortunate!” After this statement of Akhilesh Yadav, the main opposition party Samajwadi Party alleged that when the family of a senior police officer in the state is not safe in his ancestral home, then the security situation of common citizens and women can be easily estimated.

The incident took place in village Rudha Dhamrua under Malipur police station area of Ambedkarnagar district. Indravati, the 94-year-old mother of promoted IPS officer Ashutosh Mishra, posted as SP (Police Bhawan Kalyan, Lucknow) in Uttar Pradesh Police, lived alone at her ancestral residence.

The most shocking thing was that all the precious jewelery that she wore daily was missing from the body of the elderly woman. Tulsi rosary with gold beads around his neck, gold nose nail, ear tops and silver anklets worn on his feet were found missing. The family members have expressed apprehension that unknown miscreants entered the house with the intention of looting, killed them by suffocating or strangulating them and ran away with the jewellery.

When IPS Ashutosh Mishra was informed about this untoward incident on phone by his uncle Sachindra Mishra, he hurriedly left for Ambedkar Nagar from Lucknow. It is being told that on Saturday, on the occasion of Independence Day (15 August), IPS Ashutosh Mishra had come to his village and along with his mother participated in the flag hoisting program organized in a local school of the village.
After the program was over, Ashutosh Mishra returned to Lucknow for his duty late on Saturday evening, while his mother stayed in the village to oversee some incomplete construction work going on in the school. The IPS officer also had a normal conversation with his mother on phone at around 10:00 pm on Saturday night. After this, this sad and shocking incident came to light on Sunday morning.
Police and forensic teams took charge: post mortem and viscera will reveal the secret of death
Considering the seriousness and high-profile nature of the incident, Ayodhya Range DIG/IG Somen Verma and Ambedkar Nagar Superintendent of Police (SP) Prachi Singh reached the spot with heavy police force and forensic experts. The team of field unit and dog squad have collected fingerprints and other physical evidence from the spot.

The police are investigating the case two-pronged—first, whether it was murder with the intention of robbery, and second, whether the old woman’s death was natural and someone then took advantage of the opportunity to steal the jewellery.
A complaint has been registered in Malipur police station under robbery and suspicious circumstances. Since the cause of death was not completely clear in the post-mortem, the Medical Board has decided to preserve the viscera and send it to the Forensic Science Lab (FSL) so that the presence of any chemical or toxic substance can be confirmed.

Apart from Akhilesh Yadav, senior Samajwadi Party leader and former minister Pawan Pandey also expressed deep grief over the incident and slammed the state government. He said that such suspicious death of an IPS officer’s mother in Ambedkar Nagar and the disappearance of jewelery from the house is extremely shocking and heartbreaking. Opposition leaders say that when the elderly relatives of police officers sitting in the capital Lucknow are unsafe in their home district, then the state government’s claim of ‘zero tolerance on crime’ proves to be completely hollow.
On the other hand, the police administration says that several special teams have been formed to investigate the case. The footage of CCTV cameras installed on the village and surrounding roads is being scrutinized and suspicious persons are being interrogated.
