The police have also encouraged bank account holders who believe their accounts have been wrongly frozen to contact them. Police said such people can approach the authorities with proof that they are not involved in cybercrime.
How the matter came to light
The development comes in the wake of a case last December involving former inspector Taral Bhatt, who was accused of extorting money from businessmen on the pretext of emptying their bank accounts. Bhatt is currently in jail after being arrested by the Gujarat ATS under the direct instructions of DGP Vikas Sahay.
Gujarat has the highest number of complaints
According to a report presented in the Lok Sabha in February 2024, Gujarat suffered the highest loss or theft of Rs 156 crore due to cyber crime in 2023. This is 17% of the total amount affected by cyber crime across the country. The state also registered 1,21,701 cyber crime complaints related to financial fraud, ranking second after Maharashtra in terms of the number of complaints.
