The suicide of software engineer Atul Subhash has attracted the attention of the entire country. Atul, who committed suicide at his home in Bengaluru on December 9, had made serious allegations against his wife Nikita Singhania and his family in his suicide note and video. This case has given rise to a new debate on the misuse of laws meant to protect women.

Atul Subhash wrote in an 80-minute video and 24-page suicide note that his wife Nikita and her family tortured him and his family by filing false cases. He claimed that his wife took this step to extort money from him and did not allow him to meet their son.

This incident has become a matter of great national discussion, where the question is being raised whether the laws meant to protect women are being misused. However, no major political leader has yet given any public statement on this sensitive issue.

Social activist Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj, who has long raised questions about the misuse of anti-dowry laws, has demanded justice for Atul Subhash. He said:

“Laws meant to protect women are being misused to harass many men and their families. Atul Subhash is another sad example of this.”

Deepika and other activists have demanded to raise this matter in Parliament and punish the culprits.

Rahul Gandhi’s convoy and “KitKat” incident

On Thursday, activists chased the convoy of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on the streets of Delhi demanding justice for Atul Subhash. Deepika Bhardwaj shared a video on the social media platform ‘X’, in which she and her companions were showing posters of Atul Subhash while walking with Rahul Gandhi’s car and pleading for justice for him.

“Nobody discussed Atul Subhash’s suicide and the reasons behind it. We hope that this issue will be raised in Parliament, but the question is will our leaders pay attention to it?”

Atul Subhash’s brother Bikash Kumar has filed a case of abetment of suicide against Nikita Singhania, her mother Nisha, brother Anurag, and maternal uncle Sushil. The police have arrested Nikita, his mother and brother, and the investigation is ongoing.

This case highlights the serious problem of misuse of women’s protection laws and the resulting rising male suicides.
