Kolkata, June 03 (HS). Police have arrested seven more BJP workers in Sandeshkhali in connection with the disturbance on polling day. Those arrested on Monday were produced in Basirhat Sub-Divisional Court. The last phase of polling was held in Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency on Saturday. On that day BJP workers clashed with the police. Five people were arrested on the same day and now seven more arrests have been made a day before the election results.
According to police sources, seven people have been arrested from Barmajur in connection with the attack on SI Sagir Gazi of Sandeshkhali police station at Bholapara in Barmajur on the afternoon of polling day. The arrested persons have been identified as Dinesh Barik, Paritosh Sardar, Chiranjeet Sardar, Krishna Sardar, Dilip Sardar, Mihir Haldar and Sayan Banerjee. A case has been registered against them under sections 147, 148, 149, 186, 189, 353, 333, 307, 379 of the Indian Penal Code.
It is noteworthy that on the day of polling, it was alleged that Trinamool workers and supporters had gathered on one side of a booth in Bholapada of Barmadjur. On the other side of the booth were workers and supporters of BJP and ISF. Then the police, led by the SI of Sandeshkhali police station, controlled the situation by using lathis. Allegedly, at that time, the workers and supporters of BJP and ISF attacked the police. In this, the SI got injured. After the incident, Section 144 was imposed in the area.
