Kolkata, 10 October (Hindustan Reporter). The junior doctors' agitation in Kolkata gained momentum on Wednesday with police arresting nine people for sloganeering at the puja mandap. All of them were taken to Lalbazar police station, due to which the resentment of the doctors has increased. Junior doctors decided to take out a march against this from the fast site at Dharmatala to Lalbazar. However, the police had already put up barricades on the way to Bentinck Street and Lalbazar, stopping the march.
Junior doctors had organized a program called “Abhaya Parikrama” on Wednesday, in which they symbolically commemorated R.G. Kar was about to visit the hospital and puja mandaps carrying the idol of the Jaynagar victim in the vehicle. As part of the programme, they reached the puja pavilion of the Tridhara Committee associated with Trinamool MLA Devashish Kumar, where they raised slogans demanding justice. After which the police arrested him.
As soon as information about the incident was received, other agitators started marching towards Lalbazar. But the police put up barricades on Bentinck Street itself and parked buses on the road leading to Lalbazar, due to which the doctors sat on strike there and started raising slogans.
The agitators say that during their parikrama, the Minidor vehicle was stopped illegally by the police near Chandni Chowk. When the police tried to stop the vehicle, the junior doctor reached the spot and had a heated argument with the police. The police said that he did not have permission to drive the vehicle, while the doctors claimed that the vehicle was legally rented. During this time, many people gathered there, and the traffic on the roads of Central Avenue came to a complete standstill.
However, the agitators freed the minidor from the police and formed a human chain and moved the vehicle forward. During this, they raised loud slogans against the government.
