Cough syrup: The syrup we are using to get relief from cough is killing us. After questions were raised on Indian pharmaceutical companies regarding cough syrup in many countries, now a government report has said that at least 100 cough syrups have failed the quality test. These tests were conducted by the central government. Many syrups have been found to contain poisonous substances. These are the substances that have been found in cough syrups linked to the death of children in Gambia, Uzbekistan and Cameroon. This has been revealed in a government report. This report has been submitted by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization to the Ministry of Health. It has been said that these syrups do not meet the criteria of diethylene glycol (DEG) or ethylene glycol (EG) and fail in quality. Due to not meeting the standard quality, it is called NSQ (Not of Standard Quality). This is a matter of concern in the report. The report said that the batches of cough syrup were declared NSQ for parameters such as DEG/EG, assay, microbial growth, pH, and volume, which means their quality was found to be poor.

Out of 7087, 353 were found to be of poor quality

According to the report, the quality of a total of 7087 bench medicines was tested. Out of these, the quality of 353 was found to be poor. Whereas 9 syrups failed due to the presence of DEG, EG. Let us tell you that DEG and EG are such chemicals that are mixed in cough syrup. It is decided to mix a certain amount of it in the syrup. Mixing it in excess can make the syrup poisonous and the person drinking it can die.

141 children died

It is alleged that 141 children died worldwide due to the use of cough syrup made in India. After this, the government came into action and started investigating the quality of the syrup of cough syrup companies. This syrup was tested in government and private labs. In October 2022, a WHO report said that about 70 children had died due to kidney failure in Gambia. The cause of their death could be cough and cold syrup made in India, as these children had consumed this syrup. Since then, with the help of the State Drug Control Department, cough syrup manufacturing units are being investigated across the country.
