Today is the birth anniversary of India's 11th President and missileman Abul Pakir Jainulabdin Abdul Kalam. He was born on 15 October 1931 in an ordinary family in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu. His father's name was Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam and mother's name was Ashima Jainulabdeen. Kalamji's father wanted to make him a collector but no one knew then that his name would be written in golden letters in Indian history.

Abdul Kalam's childhood was spent in poverty. The father was raising 10 children by renting boats to fishermen. Perhaps for this reason Kalam also understood the value of money at an early age. The Government of India honored Kalam Saheb with the Padma Bhushan in 1981, then the Padma Vibhushan in 1990 and the country's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1997. He is the third President of the country to receive Bharat Ratna and before him Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Zakir Hussain were awarded Bharat Ratna.
