PM Modi hoisted the tricolor at the Red Fort for the 11th time, congratulated the countrymen on Independence Day | News India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hoisted the national flag for the 11th time in a row at the Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day. He will surpass former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his first Independence Day speech of his third term. Manmohan Singh hoisted the flag from the Red Fort 10 times between 2004 and 2014.

In this case, Modi has reached the third position after former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. Nehru received this honor 17 times and Indira 16 times. Before hoisting the tricolor at the Red Fort, Prime Minister Modi went to Rajghat and paid tribute to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.

Upon his arrival at the Red Fort, the Prime Minister was welcomed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth and Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane. Defence Secretary Aramane introduced Lieutenant General Bhavnish Kumar, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Delhi Area, to the Prime Minister.

After this, the GoC of Delhi area took Modi to the saluting dais, where the joint inter-services and Delhi Police guards gave the traditional salute to the Prime Minister. After this, the Prime Minister inspected the Guard of Honor. The Prime Minister's Guard of Honor included one officer and 24 soldiers each from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Delhi Police.

This year the Indian Navy is the coordination force. Commander Arun Kumar Mehta commanded the Guard of Honor. Major Arjun Singh commanded the military contingent in the Prime Minister's Guard. The naval contingent was commanded by Lieutenant Commander Gulia Bhavesh NK and the Air Force contingent was commanded by Squadron Leader Akshara Uniyal. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Anurag Dwivedi commanded the Delhi Police contingent.

After inspecting the Guard of Honour, the Prime Minister proceeded to the Red Fort grounds where he was received by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, Chief of Army Staff Gen Upendra Dwivedi, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi and Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Choudhary. The GoC of Delhi Area escorted the Prime Minister to the dais to hoist the national flag.
