PM Modi flags off country's first underwater metro, travels with school children

Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (March 6) inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of several connectivity projects worth Rs 15,400 crore. He reached Kolkata on Tuesday (March 5). This is Prime Minister Modi's second visit to West Bengal within five days.

Prime Minister gives green signal to underwater metro

The Prime Minister inaugurated the country's first underwater metro in Kolkata today. After this he traveled by sitting in the metro. He talked to many students in the metro.

Features of Underwater Metro Tunnel:

The metro train will cover a distance of 520 meters inside the Hooghly river in just 45 seconds.

This metro has automatic train operation system, that is, as soon as the motorman presses the button, the train will automatically move to the next station.

Maximum speed will be 80 km per hour.

For the safety of passengers, the train coaches (rakes) will be equipped with improved grab handles and handle loops as well as anti-skid floors and fire extinguishing equipment.

In case of emergency, passengers will also be able to communicate with the motorman through the talk to driver unit.

Each coach will also have CCTV cameras for surveillance. Each coach will have high standard amenities.

It will take six minutes to reach Esplanade from Howrah Maidan.

Of the total 16 km route, 10.8 km is underground. This also includes the lower part of the river.

The underwater metro will pass 13 meters below the Hooghly, a tributary of the Ganga. Both the tunnels have been built parallel.

By the year 2035, 10 lakh passengers will travel in this metro.
