Candidates from eight seats in six states had applied for EVM verification
Demand for accuracy of machines of 92 polling stations
New Delhi: Amidst the opposition's allegations of EVM tampering in the Lok Sabha elections, 8 candidates including BJP and Congress from 8 Lok Sabha seats in 6 states of the country have complained to the Election Commission about the electronic voting machines. They have complained about tampering with the microcontroller chips of EVMs.
On April 26, the Supreme Court refused to return to paper ballots, calling the fears of EVM tampering baseless. But at the same time, the Supreme Court gave an option to the candidates who lost in the election results. The Supreme Court said that the candidates who came second and third in the election results can file a written application for the validity of five EVMs in each constituency. The court also allowed the Election Commission to charge a certain fee for this process. According to the rules of the Election Commission, candidates who want to get the EVMs verified will have to pay Rs. 40,000 and 18 percent GST will have to be paid first.
Not only Congress but BJP candidates are also among the candidates who have demanded the authenticity of the EVM's microcontroller chips. BJP candidate from Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, Sujay Vikhe Patil has demanded the authenticity of machines at 40 polling stations. Patil lost the Lok Sabha election to Sharad Pawar's NCP candidate Nilesh Lanke. According to the Election Commission, one candidate each from YSR Congress and DMDK have also applied for verification. According to the Election Commission, candidates from eight parliamentary seats in six states have demanded verification of EVMs. Verification of machines at 92 polling stations has been demanded.
