Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while initiating public participation in water storage, said that water conservation is not just a matter of policies but also a matter of social commitment, people should think seriously about this because despite all the efforts in our country, it should be considered seriously. Work is not being done in the direction of water conservation as it should be. Special attention should be paid to water conservation during this rainy season because during this time rainwater can be stored on a large scale. Although many rules and laws have been made regarding water conservation and many schemes are being implemented by the central and state governments to motivate people to conserve water, but till now their implementation is not being done properly. The reason for this is lack of awareness and also the perception that water conservation is mainly the work of governments and their agencies. This perception is not correct. Public participation is required for water conservation. Better results will be achieved only when water conservation takes the form of a mass movement. To get such results, everyone should make efforts at their own level. Water conservation does not mean only collecting rainwater. This includes preventing the wastage of water and purifying the impure water and reusing it. At present, this work is being done on a limited scale in the country. Everyone is aware of the fact that the problem of water shortage is going to increase in the near future. Not only is the availability of drinking water decreasing, but there is also a shortage of irrigation water. Some time after the rainy season ends, the water crisis starts increasing in many parts of the country and it takes a serious form as soon as the summer arrives.
Water crisis can be tackled only when everyone is proactive about how to conserve water at every level. Now is the time to make the Prime Minister's mantra of reduce, reuse, recharge and recycle water a part of our daily lifestyle. For this, new efforts should be made at the government level to stop wastage of water, increase the habit of reusing it and raise the falling level of groundwater. Today, technology and measures are easily available to make water conservation more effective. At the level of government agencies and people, this work is still being done at a poor level. In the case of water conservation, it must also be understood that it has to be taken care of throughout the year and not just during the rainy season.
