Malawi's Vice President Saulos Chilima has died in a plane crash. There were 9 other people in the plane with him. President Lazarus Chakwera said that the plane took off from South Africa's capital Lilongwe at 9.17 am local time and was scheduled to arrive 45 minutes later. Due to bad weather, the airport authority instructed the plane to return, after which the air traffic authority lost contact with the plane.

An official statement from the Malawi government said that the plane carrying the Vice President, the Hon. Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, was found this morning in the Chikungwa forest. All those on board are dead. The President has declared a national day of mourning and ordered that all flags be flown at half-mast from today until the day of the funeral.
